I understand the attraction to alcohol. For many women, it's a way for them to wind down after a busy day or help them relax and ease into social settings. The unfortunate truth though, is that if you care about your hormones (and your health) there is no healthy level of alcohol consumption. I very rarely drink these days, so I focus more on natural alternatives which promote relaxation and calm without the nasty hangover or "hangxiety" the next day.
Kava (Piper Methysticum)
Kava is a root from the South Pacific islands that has been used for centuries in traditional ceremonies for its calming effects. I often recommend kava for its ability to reduce anxiety, improve mood, and promote social relaxation without impairing cognition. Kavalactones, the active compounds in kava, work by interacting with the brain’s limbic system, the area responsible for emotions. Kava is typically taken as a tea, tincture, or capsule and is ideal for short-term relief from stress or anxiety. Quality matters with kava so I always prescribe high quality, standardised kava for my patients.
L-Theanine
L-Theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in green tea leaves, known for its ability to promote relaxation and reduce stress without sedation. I recommend L-theanine for it's gentle yet effective calming properties, which works by increasing levels of calming neurotransmitters like GABA and serotonin. It also enhances alpha brain waves, promoting a state of relaxed focus, which makes it a perfect choice for unwinding after a long day without the need for alcohol. L-Theanine is available in supplement form and is often combined with other natural stress relievers.
Magnesium Glycinate
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, and magnesium glycinate is particularly known for its calming effects on the nervous system. I suggest magnesium glycinate as a natural way to manage anxiety, stress, and insomnia, as it helps to regulate neurotransmitters like GABA, which are responsible for calming the brain. Magnesium glycinate is one of the most bioavailable and gentle forms of magnesium, making it less likely to cause digestive upset compared to other forms. Taken as a supplement, it can help promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.
These alternatives offer a natural, effective way to relax and take the edge off, without the downsides of alcohol. Dosage does matter which is why I take into account your unique constitution and body composition before calculating the correct dosage for you to take.
